Ed Thoracotomy Trainer with Repairable Heart and Aorta (1090-004180)
CE Hours: 0.25 Session Type: SimVentors Cost: $0.00
Description:
This ED thoracotomy trainer was built in low-cost / DIY fashion to address problems with prior models one of the authors had made, along with models described online. It primarily uses low-cost commercial items such as a large balloon in place of pericardium, and over the counter tubing in place of an aorta. Commercially available common 'tissue' simulation components (e.g. silicone mold) were used to create the layers of tissue required, and a simple mold of a heart with hollow inside allows for back filling of blood into the heart through the 'aorta' tubing. Of note: The submission instructions and this submission form seemed incongruent. I am including the 3 takeaway lessons the submission instructions requested in this box as there was no space in this form. If there was another portion of the submission that was neglected due to this form and a misunderstanding, please notify us so we may address it. Takeaway lesson 1) Common commercial tissue simulations don't allow for 'repair' of structures without modifications. Takeaway lesson 2) Drop cloths and 'chucks' should be used when creating a procedure that uses a high volume of simulated 'blood'. Takeaway lesson 3) Creating an easy process of changing out a simulated 'heart' is paramount, or else it becomes difficult to have multiple individuals perform / practice the procedure in sequence.
