Low-cost Task Trainer to Evaluate Cervical Dilation (1090-004297)

Clinical Simulation allows medical students to develop abilities in a safe container that favors skills acquirement and patient security. Following this premise, we have created a low-cost task trainer to develop abilities in order to measure cervical dilation without harming patients and allowing image feedback. The system created can hold up to two fetuses with a continuous cervix dilation from 2 to 6cm. Several materials were used to develop this task trainer are described in the later section as follow: first the body structure, second the interior mechanism, followed by the engine, and finally the cervix The body structure is built from a prefabricated plastic mold. And the skin is shaped with Dragon SkinTM silicone. The interior mechanism consists in 2 main parts: a servomechanism and the control card. The first one allows different dilation positions. The second one, includes a microcontroller installed in the control card that indicates the position of the servomechanism. The control card communicates and records the direction of the movement (motion) to the speaker via Bluetooth. For the engine we used Hall effect sensors and a magnet. These sensors are sensible to changes in the magnetic field therefore they send a signal to the microcontroller when the engine reaches the maximal back and forth points. Also, a camera was installed to record the student assesses dilation through palpation. Finally, at the cervix we used a shutter-like mechanism covered with silicone giving it a realistic appearance. The process set up was performed following a design methodology for the product. The design methodology started from the requirements, specs and concept, and went straight forward to the detailed design, manufacturing and assembly to be tested. We searched for the lowest cost and commercially accessible parts to be assembled easily with the less pieces possible.
