Systems Based Disaster Simulation: A Large In Situ Simulation (1090-003957)
CE Hours: 0.25 Session Type: Prerecorded Educational Courses Session Sub Type: Hot Topics (15 minutes) Cost: $0.00
Learning Objective 1:
Understand the importance of using in-situ simulation of an external disaster in order to identify latent patient safety defects and system issues in advance of a true disaster
Learning Objective 2:
Discuss appropriate methods to effectively simulate a disaster that stresses system functioning allowing team to identify potential patient care gaps
Learning Objective 3:
Review and critique of evaluation methods in a whole hospital systems-based simulation and the use of data to impart change. Share successes, challenges, identified resolutions and means to identify solutions

This course is an example of a specific scenario, course, or curriculum.
Course Overview:
External disasters pose many challenges to the health care system. Systems issues that present themselves in a disaster are not always known prior to an event. Thus, simulating an event can identify latent patient safety defects and system issues that can be resolved a priori. We report findings of system-based challenges identified in a large multidisciplinary in-situ disaster simulation that occurred in a tertiary care pediatric hospital.
