SSH Nursing Section: COVID-19: Capturing Big Ideas and Lessons Learned for Education!
Start time: Tuesday, February 9, 2021, 2:00 PM End time: Tuesday, February 9, 2021, 3:30 PM Session Type: Prerecorded Educational Courses Cost: $0.00
Learning Objective 1:
Identify one solution for rapid implementation of innovative creative educational solutions
Learning Objective 2:
Construct a plan to convert one face-to-face educational activity to an online/remote simulation modality
Learning Objective 3:
Discuss assessment and evaluation methods for two remote simulation-based learning strategies
Course Overview:
This course will be an interactive and informative session which will be conducted by a panel of expert simulation educators who will share changes and challenges brought on by the quickly changing educational landscape due to Covid-19.
The panel will address interest and questions raised through a Nursing section member survey. Panelists will share their experience, challenges and changes brought on by the rapid movement to virtual simulation education. Success stories will showcase the many facets of education during a pandemic. Tools and resources that helped assure learning outcomes were met will be shared. For example, how were clinical hours counted? What debriefing methods were helpful? How was remote learning assessed and how were evaluation tools modified to capture outcomes? What tools were discovered during the pandemic that you will continue to use when the pandemic ends? A discussion of challenges and lessons learned will provide attendees with information to avoid mistakes and missteps.
The audience will participate through polling, open discussions and paired activities. All ideas will be documented and distributed to attendees.
Co-Presenter: Maria Bajwa, AAS, MBBS, MSMS, SUNY Broome Community College About the co-presenter: Maria Bajwa, an International Medical Graduate & Healthcare Simulation Educator, is currently working as a consultant and coordinator of the simulation activities at the nursing program at SUNY Broome Community College, Binghamton New York.
A professional with various strong healthcare experiences aside from being a physician in Pakistan, her studies are focused in healthcare simulation, earning a Master's degree in Healthcare & Medical Simulation (MSMS) from Drexel University, College of Medicine, AAS in Health Information Technology (RHIT), Instructional Designing (certificate). She is currently pursuing a PhD from MGH Institute of Health Professions in Health Professions Education with the focus on healthcare simulation.
She has worked with her nursing faculty to improve the simulation experiences at her workplace for last three years and recently spearheaded the efforts to move the nursing lab and clinical activities to online format during the transition to distance learning due to COVID-19.
She is also a member of INACSL, ASPE, AHIMA, AAMA, Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) and SimGHOSTS. She loves to spend time with the family especially her children, learning new technologies, volunteering at the local hospice and gardening whenever the Upstate New York weather allows her.
